Summer Safety for Seniors

Summer is the perfect time of year to enjoy time outdoors. During times of extreme heat, Seniors need to take precaution to avoid health risks that can come with summer activities.

Dehydration
Summer brings on the hottest temperatures of the year. That means your body will need more fluids than usual to stay hydrated. Whether you feel like you need to or not, add an extra glass of water to your routine before you head outside.

Heat Exhaustion
It’s easy to get overheated without even noticing. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, before you get out into the heat. It’s also important to rest occasionally and take breaks during times of high activity.

Sunburn
Stay indoors during the middle of the day, that’s when temperatures are the hottest. If you still want to get outdoors, apply sunscreen. Wide-brimmed hats can also help protect your face.

Allergies
If you find yourself sneezing or suffering from itchy eyes, it could be due to an increase in pollen. Be sure to check with your doctor first if you are taking any other medications before taking any new allergy medication.

Summer is a time for fun and should be enjoyed, especially outdoors. Stay aware of yourself and take any proper precautions to ensure this summer is safe, healthy, and happy.
